our sleepy tribe

alright everyone WAKE UP.

We live in one of the best little strips real estate in the whole city. We've got this nice little tribe here. We should use it more.

I've noticed a slight increase in activity, and that makes me happy. Every time I look at the list of posts in my tribes and see anything posted in this tribe it makes me excited. I fee like, "sweet a chance to get to know some more of my neighbors."

Let's just try to up the post numbers and get some dialoge in here. Maybe then we'll have the inertia to get an event going or something.

Middle Polk Neighborhood Association Meeting - Monday April 16th

Hello Neighbors. How are you? My name is John and I am originally from NY but I have lived at Sacramento and Larkin since 2000. I love baseball, comedy, wine tasting, independent films, hiking and cooking. How often do the folks on this group get together?

I also just joined the Middle Polk Neighborhood Association which is a great group and another way to meet folks in the neighborhood. Their next get together is 6:45 PM Monday April 16th at "It's a Grind" on Polk and Washington in case anyone wants to check it out. We could meet their hang out for the meeting and grab some chow at any restaurant close by.

the barking dog at Sacto/Hyde/Calif/Larkin

Does anyone know anything about the barking dog(s) in the backyard of one of the apartment buildings on the block bounded by Sacramento, Hyde, California and Larkin streets?

This started a few months ago. Several times every day the dog owner lets the dog(s) go into their building's backyard. The dog(s) bark and bark and bark until finally the owner brings the dog(s) back inside. It often goes on for hours, and often happens very late at night. I've heard it at 3am more than a few times. Other neighbors occasionally yell out their windows at the dog owner. I think I heard somebody say something out their window about there being more than one dog. I can't see any of this from my place, but it's become really annoying. I have no idea who the dog owner is, whereabouts s/he lives, or whether anyone has tried to deal with this. Do you?

now that lee's is on Larkin, i think there is a new comptetition among the other vietnamese sandwich shops which have been there before. Lees is pretty fun, but the place across the street says that no other place really understands how important it is to toast the roll properly, implying perhaps that lee's isnt as well toasted.

after 48 years this place is finally closing........located on polk and washington...........the barbers sal and allen are re-locating their services on pine and polk........right across from the grubsteak.......it is very sad when they told fred their intentions as he is now 88 and ran this institution all these years.......

When people spend their idol time complaining instead of doing sometime that will have more positive outcomes.

For example I did not see any of you at the City Hall on Monday, October 2nd when we are talking about creating police foot patrols for the Tenderloin Police District.

I do not see any of you attend these monthly meetings at the Tenderloin Police Station (301 Eddy Street) : Second Tuesday of the month @ 6PM for neighbors; Last Tuesday of the month @ 6PM meet with Police Captain Brown.

And of course find out how to get involved in the North of Market / Tenderloin Community Benefits District which operates services cleaning the sidewalks and other beautification projects. Volunters are needed and community members help decide their projects and programs. call 440-7570.

And lastly, if you want to meet the 8 candidates running for District 6 supervisor then attend the next candidate forum. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Alliance For A Better District 6 on Tuesday, October 10 @ 6PM SF Main Library, Koret Auditorium, 100 Larkin Street for more details call 989-8683.

Compton’s Cafeteria Riots Commemoration Kick-Off

A Commemoration of the 40th Year Anniversary of the Compton Cafeteria Riots will be celebrated throughout the Bay Area in 2006. Three years before the famous rioting at New York’s Stonewall Inn, a group of transgender women and gay street-hustlers fought back for the first time in history against everyday police harassment. This was known as the Riot at Gene Compton’s Cafeteria in the Tenderloin in San Francisco.

A chronicle of this historic time in 1966 marks one beginning of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) movement resistance. It has been captured in a documentary made by Susan Stryker and Victor Silverman, entitled ‘Screaming Queens’.

Please come support this kick-off event of Compton’s Cafeteria 40th Anniversary activities. It will include a showing of ‘Screaming Queens’. Come learn about this important time in LGBT history, and meet community leaders who are working to showcase this series of events and activities.

WHAT THE $@%# is up with Geary Street??!!!

I mean, I jumped for joy when they finally paved it's sorry ass. Then they put the stripes down and I thought, "Damn, that guy was drunk. That is totally wrong."

But, it's still there. Take a look. There is a double wide diamond lane for Buses Only. A lane for traffic. a half lane mystery. (I though maybe a bike lane, but, none has been painted) and then a lane for parking. Leaving ONE LANE of traffic!!!!! Country dirt roads have more than one lane! What the crap is this. There is traffic in the evening backed up to Powell!!!!!! And the traffic doesn't stop some nights until 9pm!

Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Does anyone know what the thought is? People don't know what to do. There isn't a passing lane so people weave into the diamond lane and don't know where to go. I haven't seen so many near misses on Geary in the 10 years I have lived here.

And now the best part......

Parking Meters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes folks. We hardly get any street cleaning, sidewalks NEVER. 85% of the garbage cans have gone leaving the streets covered in filth and garbage and now we get to pay for street parking too.

Does Chris Daley hate us? Does he even care? It seems like anyone who actually works in this City is evil and can be wrung dry. Hello Chris...we are working poor baby. Just making ends meet. What with high rents, MUNI rates up, all the extra tax the City charges and now this.

I feel for the homeless as much as the next guy Chris Daley, but, I don't want to end up in the shelter with them. But, at least if I do, I know I will get treated better by the City than I do by working my ass off.

Doesn't anyone else think this Sh*t is F*cked up?

bedbugs!

Hi 94109 folks,

I thought I'd just put out a warning. There has been a rash of bedbugs spreading from the 'loin and creeping up the hill - lots of incidents in 94109. These things are very often misdiagnosed (people think they're being bitten by mosquitoes, spiders, fleas, etc.), so bedbugs might not be caught in time. If you're having the itchies, you might want to call an exterminator before bedbugs destroy your furniture, books, etc.

Luckily, I caught mine fairly early on (it is taking months to get rid of them, however). The place I picked up those awful little hitchhikers on Geary/Polk was not so lucky - the gal had to throw out pretty much everything she owned! :(

Clothing tailor recommendations

Does anyone have a very good clothing tailor they go to in the 94109? I have a few pairs of pants I need to get shortened, and I need the sleeves shortened on a jacket. Any recommendations? I'm very picky about my clothes, so I might just end up hitting the place I usually go to in Noe Valley.

Opening Artist - Cubik and Origami:

This team plays regularly around SF, together and separately, and have a cult following from their first underground CD titled, It's Complicated. Their eponymous debut will be issued on Wide Hive Records, end of June 2005.

In addition, the last week of each month will be a record release party, On May 25th for VU's Mayhemystics OutBreaks, then on June 29th for Cubik and Orgami's EPs and CD.

There will be special guest performers throughout the series as well.

Try going next door Mekong, a better family owned Thai Restaurant with really friendly staff and great food with speedy service. Plus they have free wi-fi and a nice old school asian dinning environment. I'm sick of all these 'hip' Thai places in the area.

it is now official that the rendevous will not open in their new location. the lower polk businees association opposed this. the owners then made a decision that if they
were not welcome it would not be wise to enter this venture. the old axum which has been in renovation was bought by o'reilleys bar and restaurant. the same ones as in north beach. wait for the opening soon of another bar. word on the street is that the n'touch wants to make a move to the castro. now, if this happens, rendevous will take over the premises. will keep you posted on what else is going on......

how is everyone..........i would like for all of us to meet once the weather gets better.........a cup of coffee, beer or maybe even a foodie event in our hood.......

Introduction

Hi all. Thought I'd go ahead and introduce myself, and add to the discussions that seem to be going on here.

After several months away, my work studio, or at least part of it, will be moving back to the 'hood next week, so I'll be back prowling around the neighborhood on certain days. I'm happy about that! I run San Francisco's only crossdressing service - http://www.adamtoeve.com , and at least for the time being, the Polk Street area is the very best location in the city for what I do. My old workspace used to be on Geary St. for about four months last year. This time I'll be on Polk St.

As a transgender person, I've been frequenting the area for years, ever since I moved here in '99 from Texas. For a long time, Diva's on Post St, for all it's problems and shortcomings, has been one of the two main gathering places for the transgender community in San Francisco (the other being Trannyshack). I'm glad that it exists - I've met many people there who have advanced my personal growth and exploration of gender in many ways.

It's so true that the character of the neighborhood changes visibly for each block you go north. It's also true I've seen major changes on Polk Street in the last year and a half. Lush Lounge used to be a predominantly upscale gay and trans place, and before that it was the Polk Gulch Saloon with live entertainment. Now it's predominantly straight. "Mirrors" turned into Vertigo, and all the hustlers moved north to Rendezvous. Now I just read that Rendezvous has closed as well. Vertigo started out mixed and has gradually turned arrow-straight. There's a new place on Sutter and the aforementioned Blur. Certain parts of the neighborhood are starting to look like Matrix Fillmore at night. Is it a nightlife renaissance or ugly gentrification? Only time will tell.

I do know that it's only within the past year that I've been getting "stares" and "gawks" from people standing outside the new upscale bars, smoking and talking on their cell phones. Kind of annoying, as I still feel like they're the visitors to tranny central and not the other way around.

There is still plenty of grime and fucked-uppedness on Polk Street to go around, especially late at night after the bars close. But I actually feel much safer over there, speaking as a trangender person, than I do in my own neighborhood, the Lower Haight (where there's a deadly shooting on my block every few months or so, and a good dose of gang activity). And I feel Polk St. is more colorful, and a place where I feel a lot more comfortable being myself. I've never been harassed for being trans on Polk St... I only wish I could say the same about the Lower Haight.

So I really have nothing to complain about Polk St., except that I hope it maintains its fine balance between not too fucked up and not too gentrified. Lots of neighborhoods in the city (most in fact) deal with various degrees of homelessness, drug addicts, prostitution, violence, etc... This is nothing unique about Polk St. at all.

Cart Pushers

They are tiny and fastidious, pushing borrowed carts through various neighborhoods, rooting through other people's waste, looking for something shiny and recyclable. They look like they're together; their shoes are tied correctly and their clothes are clean. Do they live in rent-controlled apartments in the Sunset? Are they writers, artists, restauranteurs just looking for an extra buck to send their kids through college? Who are these people?

I remember once upon a time walking on a beach with my mom. There was litter on the beach and so she picked it up. Next thing you know she had an armful of other people's garbage, and I was embarassed, wondering if she looked like a bag lady to the untrained eye instead of the environmentalist she truly was. She is Asian, which I think has something to do with it. It must, since almost all of them seem to be Asian, too.

Are these people just trying to save the planet? What do you think?

Is anyone else irritated by the garbage cans that have all disappear during the last year from our neighborhood?

There used to be 6 on the route that I walk my dog. Making several places to drop off dog shit. Now, there are NONE!! Tempting me to start using said shit to write nasty notes on the sidewalk with it.

Like: Chris Daly Start doing your JOB! Your district looks like a filthy slum in Calcutta!!!

Instead of fighting with Landlords, how about making the place the street people have to live on, a little healthier?

The smell of human waste in some parts of the Geary, Post, Polk, Larkin, Hyde area is unbelievable. Then, you should see my office in SOMA.(94103) Especially Mondays. Piles of human waste everywhere. Garbage, and food.

At least we should have our Garbage Cans back, so that those of us who WANT a better City can do our part!! Then we can work on those greed bastards who are making us all RENT SLAVES.
