after 48 years this place is finally closing........located on polk and washington...........the barbers sal and allen are re-locating their services on pine and polk........right across from the grubsteak.......it is very sad when they told fred their intentions as he is now 88 and ran this institution all these years.......

Re: fred's barber shop
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 11:51 AMThe weird thing is,i knew Polk when it WAS centrified,before the Castro-area and Fillmore were,that was the main gay-shopping street/area .
Nice clothingstores, more than 3 recordstores and bookstores, theatres, tons of restaurants and the bars,i think most are still there but they had there time.
Double Rainbow started there,i lived just up the street from that.
The last time i was there, the Oyster depot ,the old coffee shop were still there,as was See's and yeah, the crowds of prostitutes and addicts that came in later were gone, more pushed into the Tenderloin maybe? -
